Left navigation is by far the most common of web layouts. It is often misused when a top navigation alone is needed. Use the left navigation if you have many links for your customers to browse at once. Right navigation just says, "Hey, I'm different!". It doesn't really offer any other benefits over the left navigation. Some feel that the right navigation displays the content to the reader quicker instead of the navigation options, which could serve to be distracting.
Like this site, top navigation is needed for sites with a very limited scope and specialized services. Left or Right navigation is useless space taken from the content area. Mixed navigation is used for sites with many categories and multiple links under each category. Categories can be featured in the right and left navigation menus, but separating them into the categories at the top could be better visually and less confusing.
